Refurbishing an apartment in Rotterdam 2023
A project to renovate a 1930’s apartment in Rotterdam. This compact flat of about 70 m2 is part of the “Jaffa” neighbourhood in Kralingen. This neighbourhood was listed as an urban monument. Within the restrictions that this entails, the challenge is to spatially optimise the internal layout.

Three self build homes in Almere, 2022
Together with ROAD Studio, 3 identical self build houses were designed for two brothers and their cousin in the city of Almere. The design and structure is kept very simple. They conform to the latest NZEB requirements. The void with the mezzanine enhanced the spatial quality which would otherwise be lost due to the very restrictive maximum volume and gross area rules imposed by the local authority.
Improving lifestyle, Rotterdam, 2021
In collaboration with ROADstudio, a feasibility study was submitted for the extension of a house in the area of Alexanderpolder near Rotterdam. This dormitory town was built in the 1960s according to the modern urban planning standards of the time. Few first generation homeowners are left. New residents want more living space. With the extension of this house we intend to make the house future-proof. We hope that this provides the impuls needed to revive the underestimated modern residential area as it was conceived 60 years ago and can be experienced with renewed optimism by its residents.
House extension, Rotterdam, 2021
An extension into the back garden was added to this typical late 1950’s corner terrace house. Transparant sliding doors optimise functionality between the living room and kitchen without compromising the visual unity. The façade of the extension can be opened in two directions so that the garden becomes part of the spatial experience on the ground floor.

To create more structure and intimacy, three subspaces were created in this open planned American style living room.
Châteauneuf-la-Foret, France, 2019

A village house, 2016
On this plot of land close to the centre of the village of Ouddorp, the design for a free standing house was maximised within the limits of the strict building regulations for this area. The profile and height for the roof were predetermined. The interior revolves around an internal lift and staircase leading to the bedrooms. On the ground floor doors are kept to a minimum which helps to create maximum lines of sight. The client’s large collection of paintings could be placed on the unhindered continuous length of wall.
A villa plan adapted, 2016
Designed by a property developer, this villa was bought on paper and will be located in a park setting close to the town of Bussum. The client wanted to adapt the floorpan within the limits of the design. All the possible extension options were explored including a basement cellar.
Guest Master’s study, Glenstal Abbey, 2014
The first floor bedroom of the Guest Master, a former Abbot, doubles as a study where he regularly received guests. This situation was far from ideal for reasons of privacy. The unused loggia next to the bedroom was converted into a reception area with its own independent access via an existing spiral staircase. A new bathroom was added. The reception area has a new wood burning stove which is both functional and welcoming.

Refurbishment of an apartment, 2013
The arrival of a baby called for an additional kids bedroom in this 1930’s apartment. The kitchen was moved to the spacious living room. All of the existing kitchen furniture was reused. The old kitchen became the new kids bedroom. The unused centre of the living room was used to place the dining table. The front room was left largely untouched.

Alterations to a farmhouse, Northern Spain, 2012
The house of this farm had already been renovated in the past. The first floor of the hayloft could not be altered due to its protected status. Somehow windows needed to be added on the first floor of the loft where there were none. A proposal was made to add two unobtrusive narrow vertical windows in the corner on either side of the door to solve an otherwise impossible problem.
An exercise in downsizing, Capelle a/d IJssel 2012
Instead of losing space, space was gained when a move was made from a regular terraced house to a much more compact apartment. Being forced to rethink storage space the net result is one of compactness, efficiency, comfort and above all the feeling of more space.
Refurbishment of a house, Haarlem, 2007
The house built in the 1920’s next to a park in the city of Haarlem was partially redistributed and an extra floor added. Most of the original street façade was left untouched but the interior had been heavily remodelled by previous owners. The kitchen was moved to an annex in the garden and the extra floor houses two bedrooms. A bay window was added to the new kitchen in which the breakfast table was incorporated to maximise contact with the garden.
House extension and refurbishment in Bearsden Scotland, 2004
This one floor 1930’s bungalow was remodelled and extended with a utility room plus an extra floor was added for extra bedrooms. This floor could not have been built without adding three dormer windows for height. The utility room became part of the rear façade of the house by wrapping the edge of the terrace over the utility room as a flat roof.
Refurbishment of an apartment in Madrid, 2004
Maximum and efficient use of space was a requisite when redesigning this 50 m2 compact two bedroom Apartment near the Bullring of Las Ventas in Madrid. An uncluttered view from the entrance towards the balcony creates an unobstructed view. To gain space the passage leading to the bedroom was added to the living room. The kitchen storage is placed over the dining table to gain more space.
Refurbishment of an apartment, Madrid, 2004
This 69 m2 ground floor apartment in the Salamanca district of Madrid consists of a long narrow corridor leading to small rooms. In the proposal the living room and bedroom are joined together. The wall between the kitchen and corridor was removed to make place for a dining area with a storage cabinet placed overhead. The double use of space eliminated the effect of a long narrow corridor. A feeling of space was created where there was none before.
Family house, Vidiago, Northern Spain, 1992
The design for this three storey family home in a rural setting on a sloped site made full use of the magnificent views to the Atlantic and the mountains in the North of Spain.
Design for a house, La Pereda, Spain, 2000
Next to the boutique hotel "La Posada de Babel" are the ruins of a barn which the owners wanted to convert into a private home. The existing dry stone walls were respected and form a structural backbone. The house, together with the hotel and its annex, form a group of buildings where the goal was to establish a fine balance between regional and modern architecture..
